With tax season underway, many students and parents are reviewing their 1098-T forms and reaching out with questions about what the form includes and what it doesn’t. While we previously covered how to access the 1098-T and its general purpose, this article serves as a brief recap with added clarifications based on the most common questions we receive.

What the 1098-T Includes

The 1098-T reports qualified tuition and related expenses the university is required to report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Specifically, the form may include:

  • Payments made toward qualified tuition and related fees
  • Financial Aid such as scholarships and grants, applied to those charges
  • Sponsor payments or departmental transfers applied to qualified expenses

What is Not Included on the 1098-T

Several charges students expect to see on the 1098-T are not reported by the university. The 1098-T reflects only the information the university is required to report to the IRS. These charges may include:

  • Course Ready program charges
  • Study Abroad program costs
  • Student health insurance
  • Housing, dining, Greek Life or other non-qualified fees

Calendar-Year Clarifications

One of the most frequent points of confusion relates to timing. The 1098-T only reports payments and financial aid posted within the calendar year. For example, spring 2026 tuition was due in December 2025. This payment will be reported on the 2025 1098-T, not the 2026 form.

The same rules also apply to financial aid. Only aid disbursed during the calendar year appears on that year’s 1098-T.

Need Help Interpreting Your Form?

While the University Cashier’s Office (UCO) generates the 1098-T form, the UCO is unable to provide tax advice. We recommend contacting a tax professional or tax preparer for guidance on how to report tuition and other education-related expenses on a tax return.

Students can continue to access their 1098-T through MyPack Portal. Parents or authorized guests may view the form using their Brickyard Login once access has been granted.
