As winter abates, plans for summer begin. For many 9-month faculty, summer planning includes thinking about summer salary on their contracts or grants.
What is Summer Salary?
Summer salary refers to any earnings paid through NC State University for work performed by 9-month faculty during the period between May16 and August 15, including Maymester instruction.
When is Summer Salary Allowable?
For summer salary to be allowable, there are several principles and processes that have to be followed:
- Summer salary is only available to 9-month faculty. 12-month employees cannot earn summer salary.
- Summer salary has to be for work performed during the summer.
- Summer salary cannot include payment for non-sponsored activity such as teaching or departmental administration.
- Summer salary has to be consistent with REG 05.58.01 – Additional Compensation Paid through the University.
- During the summer, a 9-month faculty member may be paid no more than a total of 33.33% (based on 1.0 FTE equivalent) of their 9-month base salary from all sources of funds.
- A 9-month faculty member may not exceed 90% of the allowable summer salary, per summer pay period, to one or more sponsored projects.
- Employees receiving, processing or approving summer salary must complete annual summer salary training. Your CRO coordinates with the ORI training team to get the courses loaded in reporter as needed.
