The Role of a Fiscal Manager

Written by Justo Torres, Director, Contracts and Grants.

The most common role in Contracts and Grants is that of a fiscal manager. With 16 fiscal managers and senior fiscal managers, do you know who they are and what they do?

Fiscal Managers in the Office of Contracts and Grants are experts in various aspects related to sponsored research projects’ post award financial activities and associated policies, rules and regulations, and with the various financial management processes and systems utilized by the research sponsors, additional research partners and other departments at NC State University.

Fiscal managers are critical liaisons between the sponsor and the research team on all financial matters. If you need assistance with any of the following, the fiscal manager assigned to your award should be your first point of contact:

  • Billing and invoice matters
  • Burn rates and spending
  • General allowability of costs
  • Requirements for backup documentation
  • Guidance on budget modifications
  • Guidance on closeout
  • Audit risk

While they may not be in the lab, fiscal managers are a critical part of the research team at NC State and can play a key role in the positive outcome of our sponsored activity.
