Tuition Waiver Guidance for Employees

Written by Mia Pollard.

This month’s Finance Division Knowledge Base spotlight is on the Tuition Waiver Program.

The Tuition Waiver Program provides an opportunity for eligible staff and faculty to have tuition waived for courses taken at University of North Carolina System Institutions. Eligible full-time faculty and staff at NC State can waive tuition for up to three courses per year through any UNC system school. The steps to apply for a tuition waiver are as follows:

  1. Determine your program type (i.e. Non-Degree, Undergraduate, or Graduate)
  2. Apply for program admission
  3. Confirm in-state residency status for tuition purposes. See Residency Status When Using Faculty/Staff Tuition Waiver
  4. Register for classes
  5. Start your tuition waiver application by visiting the MyPack Portal and navigating to the Employee Self Service homepage > Benefit Details > Employee Waiver Form. Employees taking classes at NC State must complete this form by the billing date. Employees taking classes at other UNC System schools should follow the due dates and deadlines for the institution where classes are being taken.
  6. Ensure your supervisor has electronically signed your waiver by the official census date.
  7. Review your student account to ensure charges have been credited.

Once the electronic waiver is submitted, it is sent to the employee’s supervisor and a printed version is available for classes taken at other UNC System schools.

The Tuition Waiver Application is available in the MyPack Portal when the enrollment period begins.
