NC State participates annually in the NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments. This study includes institutions from across the nation and provides a basis for benchmarking endowment performance across institutions. The results from the 2023 Study of Endowments were recently released. A summary of NC State’s performance benchmarked against other study participants is available on FAI’s website.
NC State and its Associated Entities achieved an endowment market value of $2.03 billion at June 30, 2023. This ranks NC State’s endowment as the 74th largest out of the 699 institutions that responded to the study. Among public institutions, NC State’s endowment ranked as the 30th largest.
At 1.4%, NC State investment performance for the one-year period was lower than the average one-year return for all institutions (public and private) at 7.7%. However, NC State remained competitive when compared to other North Carolina institutions:
- UNC Chapel Hill: -0.4%
- Duke University: -1.0%
- Wake Forest University: 0.6%
For the three-year period, the NC State average annual return of 12.7% reflected top decile performance for public universities. For the five-year and ten-year periods the NC State average annual returns of 9.4% and 9.2% respectively, reflected top quintile performance for public universities.
