Financials for HR Professionals

Written by Maria Fister.

Ever wish you had a better handle on the financial side of your human resources (HR) role? You’re not alone! To help HR professionals integrate financial acumen into their existing skill set, University Human Resources and the Finance Division have partnered to create the Financials for HR Professionals program. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between human resources and financial literacy, providing HR professionals with essential knowledge to effectively navigate the intersection of the two disciplines.

This program consists of five essential areas:

  • Budget and Finance
  • Payroll, Time and Labor
  • Position Management (Budget and Distribution)
  • HR Actions and Processing
  • Queries and Reporting

The first foundational guide, Budget and Finance, is now live and covers key topics including financial terms, funding sources, organizational unit codes (OUCs), budget overviews and fiscal year processes. The contents of this guide will not turn you into a CPA, but will give you the essential knowledge necessary to feel confident when navigating financial topics, understanding OUCs and making informed decisions that impact your team and the university.

The Financials for HR Professionals program underscores NC State’s commitment to equipping its professionals with the comprehensive knowledge needed in today’s dynamic business landscape.

Keep an eye out for the remaining guides and get ready to level up your financial literacy and make an even bigger impact in your department.
