Meet Erin Delehanty

Written by Tabitha Groelle.

In our current edition of our Chatting With series, I spoke with Erin Delehanty, senior director for  Foundations Accounting & Investments. Foundations Accounting & Investments, better known as FAI, provides accounting, investment and treasurer support services to the University’s Associated Entities and Endowment Fund. As senior director, Erin is responsible for overseeing the management of more than 3,000 endowments and $2 billion in investments. Let’s get to know her a little better.

Tabitha:      Let’s start with the basics. When did you start working at NC State and in what position?

Erin:            I started in February 2012, as the controller of FAI.

Tabitha:      When did you get promoted to your current position?

Erin:            I served as interim senior director from May 2019 until May 2021. I was officially promoted in May 2021.

Tabitha:      What’s the best part of your job?

Erin: I like seeing the impact of fundraising on campus. We see the pledges and funds from those pledges come in but seeing the impact – whether that is buildings, art, scholarships – it’s what makes it real. I also like being in a university environment. I like seeing the students walking around and the energy they bring to campus.

Tabitha:      What did you do before coming here?

Erin:            I worked in public accounting for ten years as a tax manager.

Tabitha:      Where did you go to school?

Erin:            I received my Bachelor’s in Accounting from the University of Florida and my Master’s in Accounting from Notre Dame.

Tabitha:      You are a CPA. Do you have any other type of professional certifications?

Erin:           I do not. Fun Fact, on its first attempt, ChatGPT-3.5 (Artificial Intelligence) took the CPA exam and failed.

Tabitha:      Many people know you make cookies, especially during the holidays. How did you get into baking?

Erin: I love cooking and baking. I started baking with my mom when I was a kid. I have just taken it to the next level. As a matter of fact, I just took a croissant class last weekend.

Tabitha:      How many cookies do you think you make during the holidays? You always have a theme. How do you pick your theme?

Erin:            I make about 450 cookies. As to the theme, I’m not that creative, so I search the internet and find something that catches my attention and build from that.

Tabitha:      Well, I can tell you that every year I am totally impressed with your skills and look forward to seeing what the theme is for the year. My KitchenAid is usually not being used and is ready in case of a back-up if needed.

Tabitha:    What’s your “escape from reality” activity?

Erin:         I love the sun and being outside in the sun. It does not matter where.

Tabitha:    What inspires or motivates you?

Erin: Knowing that I’ve done a good job and that it’s appreciated. When I accomplish a goal or finish a job and it’s recognized, it makes me want to continue to keep going and take it to the next level. I like knowing that hard work is appreciated and the product of my work is used by others.

Tabitha:      Thank you for sharing a little bit about who you are with me.
