Tuition and Fee Appeal Process

NC State offers a formal fee appeal process to ensure students have a path to request adjustments when unusual circumstances affect their ability to remain enrolled or meet financial obligations. Various university departments handle appeals related to their respective charges, such as housing, dining, study abroad or Greek Life, while the University Cashier’s Office (UCO) oversees appeals for tuition and fees.

The UCO’s tuition and fee appeal process is designed for situations beyond a student’s control, such as serious illness or injury, major changes in employment, the death of an immediate family member or a documented university error. Students must complete a University Refund Application and provide clear, relevant supporting documentation to ensure a thorough and fair review.

Appeals for tuition and fees must be submitted no later than the last day of final exams for the semester the charges were applied. Once received, the UCO verifies the submission is complete before forwarding it to the appropriate administrative reviewer. If the decision is a denial, students may request an additional evaluation by the University Fee Appeals Committee, unless the situation is unappealable as outlined under the Not Subject to Appeal provisions. The Committee’s decision is final and not subject to further appeal.

While not every appeal results in an adjustment, the UCO remains committed to reviewing each case carefully and working with students to navigate financial challenges with fairness and transparency.
