As we continue our Chatting series, I met with Justo Torres, Director of the Office of Contracts and Grants. Contracts and Grants has been part of the Finance Division since July 2016. Justo is a quiet, laid back person that seems very unassuming. I got to know him a little better.
Tabitha: Let’s start with the basics. When did you start working at NC State and in what position?
Justo: I started in March 2015, in my current position as Director of Contracts and Grants.
Tabitha: So this has been your only position here at NC State. Where did you work before coming here?
Justo: I was the assistant Director for Award Management at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Tabitha: Hmm, you came from the light blue school. What drew you to NC State?
“It was a career advancement but it was also an opportunity to get back to the finance portion of contracts and grants, which is what I really like.”
Tabitha: Where did you go to school?
Justo: I graduated from Florida International University in Miami, Florida, with a degree in Public Administration.
Tabitha: What’s your “escape from reality” activity?
Justo: Boating.
Tabitha: What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
“I’m a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and go on routine patrols. As a matter of fact, just last weekend we were doing man-overboard drills.”
Tabitha: What?! I think you just became one of my biggest heroes. Now I have so many other questions.
Tabitha: What inspires or motivates you?
“I’m inspired by growth and learning new things.”
Tabitha: What have you found most enjoyable about working at NC State?
Justo: The people here are nice and cooperative.
Tabitha: Thank you for sharing a little bit about who you are with me.
